persephone's light

persephone's light

Every September, I get the same sensation. The end of summer, not yet fall. It usually happened on September 1st, the day school started again. I wake up, and look out of the window. The sky is a clear light-blue, and the window has dew on it. While I’m warm under the covers, my breath is cold. It is the first day that my room will be cold again.

This phenomenon corresponded with my favourite myth: the myth of Persephone and Demeter. Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of fertility. One day the God of the Underworld, Hades, kidnapped Persephone and made her his Queen. Demeter was devastated, and everything on Earth withered. Zeus, distressed by the humans cry for help, made an agreement. Persephone was allowed to return to her mother for half of the year, and had to spend the other half with Hades. Thus, the seasons were born: Demeter rejoices when her daughter arrives, making everything bloom. But when Persephone has to leave, everything on earth falls into winter.
