24 hour comics challenge

One room... 24 artists... Each with 24 blank pages... And 24 hours ahead... GO! This is what the 24-hour-comics-challenge looks like. A concept devised by acclaimed cartoonist and theorist Scott McCloud in 1990 to challenge comic artists to complete one story within a single day.

Start: 22 june 2024, 10 a.m.
End: 23 june 2024, 10 a.m.
Location: Cafe Edward, Speldenstraat 1, Gent

The challenge:
On the day of the event, artists gather in the space, ready to take on this comic marathon. The clock starts ticking, and each participant starts creating their story, with the goal of completing it within the 24 hour time limit. They work throughout the day and night, in a room filled with comradery and creativity, encouraging each other to complete the challenge.

Rules:
- The challenge lasts exactly 24 consecutive hours.
- You work independently on your own story
- Each comics story created must consist of 24 pages (webcomics in the infinite canvas format must consist of 100 panels)
- You may collect research materials and drawing tools in advance
- However, the story or plot of the comic may not be planned or set in advance
- No sketches may be put on paper until the start of the 24 hours
- All breaks, whether for eating, sleeping or other purposes, will count as part of the 24 hours. We will provide catering and endless coffee.

The challenge will take place at café Edward during the GRID comics expo. This means that the space will be open to visitors during the exhibition opening hours. While the comics challenge is a group experience, for those who need a bit more privacy, a separate room is available.

Participation in the event is only possible on site. If you cannot come to Ghent but would like to participate in the challenge, we do encourage you to do so remotely. Follow the game rules and timetable mentioned above, and share your progress on Instagram with the hashtag #ComicsChallengeGhent.

Places are limited! If you need to cancel your participation at any point, please let us know as soon as possible so we can give your spot to another artist.

The event is organised by the Tieten Met Haar collective, with support from the City of Ghent.
