« pHenomeen » is a contraction of « phénomène » in French and « fenomeen » in Dutch. 
The first two letters evoke pH, an acronym for hydrogen potential measuring the acidity or basicity of a liquid. This name warns of the acidification of the oceans which alters the shells and skeletons of marine species, favoring the proliferation of toxic algae and jellyfish, resilient in the face of increasing levels of marine carbon dioxide.
